Penicillin-streptomycin (Double antibiotic)
Penicillin-streptomycin (Double antibiotic) is a widely used antimicrobial mixture for preventing bacterial contamination in cell cultures. Its combined activity is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Penicillin, originally isolated from Penicillium fungi, disrupts
bacterial cell wall synthesis by interfering with peptidoglycan formation and indirectly promoting the release of autolytic enzymes. Streptomycin, derived from Streptomyces griseus, binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to cell death in susceptible
strains.
This product contains 10,000 U/mL of penicillin and 10 mg/mL of streptomycin and is filtered through 0.1μm to remove bacteria. Use at a ratio of 1 mL of penicillin/streptomycin per 100 mL of culture medium.
